History of the Ardmore Soup Kitchen
The Ardmore Soup Kitchen began as a food bank by a Boy Scout Troop
member who wanted to help the least fortunate amongst us. Jim Young
was the troop's scoutmaster. Experience dictated the need for hot
meals. In January 2001, Jim and his wife Virginia established the
hot soup kitchen at 11 B St. N.W. Rebeca Glaser (580-340-1056), now
manages the kitchen with the help of volunteers from 24 churches,
corporations, and similar organizations from Ardmore.
Each group works twice per year. Each time each organization works
Monday through Friday, preparing and serving a hot meal from ingredients
procured by Becca. Cooks (2 or 3 individuals) arrive at 3:00 pm each
day to prepare the soup and clean up the kitchen. Five to eight
servers come in by 5:00 pm, to make tea and coffee, set up dishes and
lay out the fruit, cookies, etc. that supplements the soup.
The meal is ready to serve at 6:00 pm when the doors open. Ten to sixty
men, women, and children are fed and the doors are closed at 7:00 pm
for clean up.
St. Mary has been assigned a week in April and a week in October. We
have supported this ministry for fourteen years.
